HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETE PROGRAM – INTRODUCTION

The Next Generation HKY High Performance Athlete Program consists of:

• On-ice training to refine all facets of your player’s hockey game
• Stride specific training on the Blade Skating Treadmill to make your player a faster and more efficient skater
• Player Evaluation, Mapping and Custom Development Plans

Why the HPA Program?

Throughout the off-season, the HPA Program will progress in the amount of training time, complexity, and intensity. This will allow your player to be at their prime for tryouts. Your player will continuously be improving to become an all-around faster skater, smarter hockey player, and better athlete.

Every athlete’s schedule will have different load requirements and restrictions. Each family should take time to plan accordingly throughout their players’ off-season with consideration given to adolescent age, training, and other activities/commitments.

We have taken the time to remove some of the guesswork from this process by again supplying a ‘one stop shop’ off-season program for your athlete.

By registering in our HPA program, we are personally invested in your player’s success and achievement of goals. We are committed to making ourselves available as needed to aid you in your complete off-season planning process.

Science Behind the Program

SCIENCE BEHIND THE PROGRAM

SPORT-SPECIFIC TRAINING

Hockey is characterized by intermittent high-intensity skating, with rapid changes in velocity and direction. Typically, players are on-ice for 15 to 20 minutes of a 60-minute game. Each shift lasts from 30 to 80 seconds, with four to five minutes of active recovery between shifts. Work-to-rest ratios vary; however, are often 1 to 4.

During a game, nearly 70% of the energy systems being used by players are anaerobic. The anaerobic energy system is used to promote strength, speed, and power, and relies on energy sources that are stored in the muscles as opposed to being dependent on oxygen. Muscle energy systems trained using anaerobic energy systems lead to greater performance in short duration, high intensity activities, that last from seconds up to two minutes. Players require highly developed anaerobic energy pathways in order to excel at the sport. The length of the game and the need to recover quickly from each shift demands a good aerobic system.

When training players, it is imperative to make the anaerobic energy system the key system being targeted in training in order to see improvements in the player’s performance. To improve the performance of hockey players, they need to train regularly using intense anaerobic conditioning. Performing high tempo skills and drills extends the time that large amounts of energy can be produced quickly and reduces the time that a player needs to recover between each intense effort. Players should be trained using their anaerobic energy systems in appropriate work-to-rest ratios to see the highest benefit to their on-ice performance.

Our High Performance Athlete Program will be training your elite athlete through the mechanisms above. We will be focusing on improving the anaerobic energy systems of the players with the proper work-to-rest ratios. This will allow your player to be able to perform for the entire 60 minutes of the game. As an added feature, your player will be in better physical shape, so they will not succumb to mental fatigue, loss of focus, or be as prone to injury.

Experience & Certifications

EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS

PASSION AND EXPERIENCE

Our lead coaches have been working in Eastern Ontario since 2008. With 5 full-time coaches and an impressive list of part-time coaches, we have the premium instructors any program could offer your player.

DEREK MILLER

Derek has a lifetime of experience in the playing, coaching, and d evelopment across many sports, with his true passion being hockey and personal training. Having a 25 year playing ca reer combined with 19 years of coaching and player development, Derek has extensive experience to draw from when working with athletes in today’s game. Derek’s background in science while studying biology as an NCAA athlete gives him a unique lens when developing multi-phase programming for hockey specific training.

EVAN BROWNRIGG

Evan’s youthful energy and extensive experience both locally and int ernationally are without a doubt what gives him his unmatched hunger for helping athletes. The sheer amount of hour s Evan logs on ice training players annually is not rivaled by any other coach/trainer in Eastern Ontario. Pulling the most out of each player and r ecognizing their individual goals has become Evan’s second nature.
